How to find a cheap flight to Laos ?

Updated: Jul 23, 2020

Looking for international flight as cheap as possible and not too long, is always an hard task. You never know what is the average price of airline tickets, if the rate posted on the internet is really interesting, or if in a week it will have increased or decreased ... You always have 3 or 4 search engines open at the same time to compare ... and different prices ... To sum up, buying flight tickets by internet is always a big hassle ... But don’t worry, we are here to help! After several years advising our travelers in the purchase of their international flights to go to Laos, we have gained some experience that we will share with you.

How much does a ticket to Laos cost ? And how long does it last ?

From Europa :

There is no direct flight from Europa to Laos, you will always have at least 1 stopover either in Bangkok or Hanoi. From Europe, it is not uncommon to have flights with 2 stops, especially if you want cheaper prices. In the best case, your flight will last 15 hours, but on average the trips are up 18 to 24 hours. This can of course last much longer depending on the stopping times.

From Australia :

From Canberra, it will cost you around 700-800usd to reach Luang Prabang. There is no direct flight, thus you will probably have to stop in Melbourne and Bangkok as well. This trip will last between 19 and 22 hours depending of the stops.

What are the best websites to purchase your flight tickets ?

Since the time we advise our travelers in their research, we have come to have some favorite sites to find cheap and quick flights.

Skyscanner.net and optionway.com are very effective at finding interesting flights. Skyscanner allows you to see prices on several days in a row which is very convenient to find cheaper flights if you are flexible with your holidays.

For flights in Asia, we recommend the company AirAsia which is the equivalent of the Asian ryanair. You will have access to low cost flights.

Important tip, prices are often the lowest 3 or 4 months before departure and not a year in prior as one might think. Departures on week days are also cheaper than those on a weekend.

Which airport should I choose depending on my trip ?

There are 3 international airports in Laos : Luang Prabang in the north, Vientiane in the center and Pakse in the south. It is also possible to start or end your trip in Thailand.

Thus, if you start your vacation in Laos with a cruise on the Mekong River, we advise you to take a flight to Chiang Rai. Located 3 hours drive from the border, it is then easy to reach the town of HouayXay in Laos which is the starting point for 2-day cruises to Luang Prabang.

If you want to discover the North and South of Laos, it is more convenient to take a flight to the city of Pakse or Ubon in Thailand and a flight back from Luang Prabang. Laos extends over 1500 km, so it is worth taking an internal flight rather than driving for 24 hours to reach the airport of your arrival.

If you make a loop in the north of the country, we advise you to prefer the city of Luang Prabang for your arrival and your departure. It is closer to the regions with the most sensational landscapes of the country and where the ethnic groups mostly live. In addition to that, this city is very charming! This is the perfect place to enjoy a few days to relax and stroll at the beginning or end of the trip.

You now know all our tips to find cheap international flights and as fast as possible. If you have any further questions when organizing your trip with ORLA TOURS travel agency, our experts Vasanath, Phasouk and Charly will be here to advise you.
