Accommodation in Laos (part 1), charming and luxury hotels

Updated: Jul 23, 2020

Although the country has been open to tourism for just 20 years, there are many accommodation solutions, especially in the main cities of the country. In this article, we will focus on charming and luxury hotels. We will see later that guesthouses and Homestay are also possible solutions for accommodation during your stay in Laos.

Charming hotels in Laos

There are many charming hotels in the big cities of Laos such as Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng, Vientiane or Pakse. They provide a high-quality customer service that is not necessarily found in a guesthouse, such as a swimming pool, laundry, spa or inner restaurant. They are also generally better maintained than most guesthouses. In the vast majority of cases, these are small luxury hotels with typical architecture and a garden, which allows you to enjoy the natural beauty of Asia in the evening after your tour.

In northern Laos, for example in Luang Prabang, there are many choices. And you will not find large skyscrapers as a hotel, but buildings on a human scale, thanks to the UNESCO World Heritage registration.

As soon as you get away from tourist sites, it becomes very difficult to find good quality accommodation, and the choice is considerably reduced. So, if you want to visit Laos off the beaten track, meet the northern ethnic groups or if you want to do a trek, we will not always be able to offer you 3-star hotels or more. To discover the countryside, the rural daily life and the authentic Laos, it is necessary to agree to spend a few nights in countryside guesthouses (not always very clean, nor comfortable) or stay overnight in a village. But we assure you that it is well worth it!

To give you an idea of the prices, a night in a charming hotel can go from 60 to 200 euros, according to the services of the establishment and the period of the year. If you come to Laos during the low season, prices can decrease by 30 to 40% depending on the type of room.

Luxury hotels

There are also luxury hotels in big cities or sometimes completely isolated from the rest of the world. In the second case, it's a great way to "cut yourself off" and just enjoy your stay. It is often necessary to stay at least 2 or 3 nights so that the difficulty of access is worth it. They offer activities and excursions in the surrounding countryside to meet the villagers and ethnic groups.

In these prestigious establishments, the service is of course of very high quality, the restaurant led by a renowned chef, the spa, the pool, the rooms must all be exceptional and atypical setting.

Luang Prabang, a small town which architecture is registered at the UNESCO world heritage, combines charm and relaxation with a beautiful panel of luxury hotels. This small city is ideal for a week of luxury trip or for example a honeymoon with an exceptional hotel, walks in the historic colonial downtown, a cruise on the Mekong river aboard a slow traditional boat, an excursion to a waterfall with turquoise water ...

The price range is very wide from 200 euros per night to more than 1 500 euros.
